So Sidlani?
Hi, So this is my first Blog about food and I find it ironic that it falls in January or rather Janu-worry. I mean, from the extreme food & drink sports in December, during the festive season -borderline GLUTTONY- to this Janu-worry shift where we are all either too tired to cook, to eat or wait for it, flat out broke and can’t believe payday is at least 3 weeks away. So Sidlani until then?
The Golden Ingredient : The Cabbage
I am an avid believer of quick and budget friendly meals that still bring the flavour to the table. Perhaps its best we rip the bandage off now and address the elephant in the room or the Golden Girl this month “The Cabbage” . Yeah yeah I know some cannot relate to this and its totally fine, but to those who blew their budget over the festive , are only left with enough to cover for basics and can only afford the Cabbage… let’s get into it.
Versatility
The Cabbage has got to be the most versatile ingredient yet, and all rounder to be fair. Can be used to create Michelin star dishes, Can be enjoyed Raw as a crisp coleslaw, sautéed into hearty stews/ soups, and you can juice it raw and get in absolute great shape from just drinking it.
Nutritional Powerhouse
Cabbage is rich in Vitamin C and K, high in fibre, and low in calories, making it a fantastic choice for health-conscious eaters and fitness bunnies. It’s also packed with antioxidants and supports gut health, especially when fermented (we talking natural probiotics).
Budget Friendly
It goes without saying that it is the most economical vegetable available in the market, providing great value for money while being widely available pretty much everywhere.
Long Shelf Life
Unlike many fresh veggies, the cabbage has a longer shelf life when stored properly, making it a very convenient kitchen staple. To be honest, there’s always a cabbage lying around in almost every household particularly in January.
Global Appeal
The cabbage is a key ingredient in cuisines around the world, Asian stir-fries love to see the cabbage coming, Eastern European stuffed cabbage rolls, to the most humble African fried cabbage with onions and a little bit of the famous chicken stock ‘Benny’. Let’s be honest, this is Global Appeal.
Texture and Flavour
The cabbage has a delightful crunch that holds up pretty well in salads and most importantly tacos, while cooking it brings out its sweetness, and tenderises the leaves, offering layers and layers of textures in one Vegetable.
Eco Friendly
A sustainable crop that grows in a wide range of climates, requires relatively lower resources compared to other vegetables. I could literally wake up tomorrow and start farming these and the probability for success is a guaranteed 1.
Creative Possibilities
The Cabbage can be used as a low-carb wrap substitute, roasted for caramelized goodness, or even grilled to create unique smokey flavours and lastly Juiced and added to the most flavourful raw veggie juices that will have you smashing those fitness goals If your Jaw has not dropped to the floor yet, Wait till you try the newest Recipe I am dropping of “The Cabbage Pizza”, try it out as your Janu-Worry got-to meal and you will easily agree that the Cabbage is an unsung hero.
Happy Cooking!
It seems the market saw your blog then hiked the prices😅🙆🏿♂️
