Indigenous Food Innovation Series with TAVI In Partnership with the World Vegetable Centre

I’m proud to collaborate with the World Vegetable Centre through their TAVI (Taiwan Africa Vegetable Initiative) to launch a compelling new video series centered on indigenous vegetables and food education. This initiative celebrates the rich heritage of local crops, with a mission to:

  • Promote sustainable agriculture
  • Elevate nutritional awareness
  • Add value to indigenous vegetables
  • Empower communities through knowledge and food sovereignty

TAVI approached me to help amplify the value-add potential of indigenous food, inspired by my ongoing journey as a culinary creative rooted in African traditions. They saw in me a voice that could “preach the food language louder” and help make indigenous cuisine exciting, respected, and relevant again.

This project is deeply personal. It aligns with my larger mission of decolonizing the palate—one meal at a time. The series begins with Okra (Mandwandwa), a vegetable rich in nutrients and culinary potential. While traditionally served with pap, I’m exploring innovative ways to elevate it into modern, visually exciting dishes that spark curiosity and pride in African food heritage.

This is the start of a powerful journey. As someone who has spent the past couple of months telling African food stories (and almost a decade in the food space), I know this is where I’m meant to be—researching, innovating, and advocating for the foods we grew up eating. I’m excited to be the noisemaker this movement needs and to continue bridging the gap between tradition and modern taste.
